Military engineering is a combat trade that is useful to all units fighting at
the front. Engineering is also used during North Atlantic Treaty Organization
(NATO) and United Nations (UN) missions when it comes to mine clearance,
explosives handling, water purification, heavy equipment operation and the
construction of camps, buildings and fortifications. Military engineering is
aimed at making it possible for friendly forces to live and move about on the
battlefield and preventing the enemy from doing the same. It provides maximum
combat effectiveness for infantry, armour and artillery. Its primary tasks are
constructing roads and facilities, handling explosives, purifying water,
building minefields, clearing mines, breaching obstacles and using manual and
mechanical tools and specialized vehicles.
The Treaty of 1855 makes reference to the formation of a voluntary militia engineer company including, among others, three officers and 60 non-commissioned members. The history of engineering was greatly influenced by the contributions of engineers from the French and British armies. The origins of the Canadian sappers go back to our Reservists, who were strong men between the ages of 16 and 60. Many heritage sites still exist and continue to serve as a tangible testimony to their achievements and as crowning symbols of their expertise. These sites include Champlain’s Habitation in Quebec City, the Fortress of Louisbourg in Nova Scotia, the walls of Quebec City, the Citadel and many others.
35 Combat Engineer Regiment has been in existence since November 23, 2006. It occasionally serves the community in cooperation with the civil authorities. For example, the regiment was present during the ice storm of 1998 and recently was involved in building a bridge in the town of La Pocatière to serve a cycling trail.
The most illustrious customs and traditions of the regiment have always focused on group effort, cohesion and team spirit. Over the years, the many accomplishments of 35 Combat Engineer Regiment have shown that the unit has always been in top form.
