Mission: the mission of the Field Artillery is to destroy or neutralize the enemy by means of direct or indirect fire. The role of the artillery regiments is to provide fire support. Together with the infantry, armour and combat engineers, the Artillery constitutes the combat team whose real job is to confront the enemy. The contribution of Field Artillery to the team lies in its firepower, which allows the other elements to get close to the enemy and destroy them.
The history of the 6th Field Artillery Regiment begins in 1899. It is the oldest French-speaking artillery regiment in Canada. Prior to World War I, the Regiment was assigned to coastal defence and during that war also served in the British West Indies. An anti-aircraft section was added after the end of hostilities. Between the two world wars, the Regiment established its reputation across Canada by winning several trophies and fire-for-effect competitions. During World War II, the three sub-units of the Regiment established themselves. The 57th Battery, assigned to anti-aircraft defence, served in England. In 1942, the 58th Battery supported the Polish armoured division on the Western front. Many officers, NCOs and men were decorated and mentioned in dispatches. For its part, the 59th Battery was tasked with a defence role near Quebec City and in the Maritimes. The unit took the name of the 6th Field Artillery Regiment in 1946 and since then has continued to win honours and trophies.
