CWO Robert A Murphy

CFB Edmonton Garrison Regimental Sergeant MajorCWO Robert Murphy joined the Canadian Forces directly after graduating High School in 1981 and was subsequently sent to Wainwright Alberta where he received basic training at the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Battle School and emerged as the top candidate.

He was then transferred to 2PPCLI in Winnipeg, where he served as a member of Charlie Company Headquarters (C Coy HQ). In 1982 he volunteered for the Basic Parachutist Course. Upon successful completion he was then transferred to the Canadian Airborne Regiment (CAR) at CFB Petawawa where he served with 2 Airborne Commando (2 ABN CDO).

It was during this time Cpl Murphy was cross posted to the Pathfinder Platoon where he became qualified Military Freefall Parachutist (MFP), Patrol Pathfinder, Jumpmaster (JM) and Parachute Instructor (PI). During this time he also attended the Infantry Section Commanders Course (ISCC) attaining top candidate and was promoted to Master Corporal (MCpl).

During the summer of 1987 he was posted to 3 PPCLI in Victoria where he was promoted to Sergeant (Sgt). He served in B Coy and again in Recce Platoon. He excelled in all areas and subsequently was placed on the Platoon Warrant Officers Course (QL6B), Senior Leaders Course (SLC) and was then promoted to Warrant Officer (WO) on posting back to 2 ABN CDO the summer of 1991.

With his second rotation with 2 ABN CDO he served as a platoon WO during Canada’s commitment to Operation Deliverance in Somalia and the Regimental Emplaning WO until the disbandment of the Regiment in 1995.

In the summer of 1995 WO Murphy moved to the Infantry School in Gagetown as member of C Coy, Small Arms Cell where he then assumed the Subject Matter Expert Small Arms Cell (SME SA) in the winter of 1997. During the last year at the Infantry School he served as the Standards WO for Small Arms.

In the summer of 2000 WO Murphy was posted to CFB Edmonton into Alpha Company (A Coy) of 1PPCLI as Company Quartermaster (CQ), while there he attended the Company Sergeant Majors Course. WO Murphy was then posted 33 Canadian Brigade Group Headquarters in 2002 as the G3 Individual Training and was promoted to Master Warrant Officer (MWO).

MWO Murphy was posted to 3 PPCLI the summer of 2004 as CSM for A Coy. It was during this time MWO Murphy was contacted and subsequently posted to the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR) at CFB Petawawa. CWO Murphy promoted to his present rank, served as Combat Service Support Sergeant Major (CSS CSM), Drill Sergeant Major (DSM) and served a tour in Afghanistan within Canadian Special Operations Command (CANSOFCOM).

CWO Murphy is supported by his loving wife, Debbie of 24 years and proud father to sons Ryan, working in Pembroke ON, and Colin who will be attending his second year at Carleton University.
